Shokz headphones have carved a unique niche in the audio world with their innovative open-ear design and bone conduction technology. As someone who’s spent over 16 months using Shokz daily, I can confidently say they’ve revolutionized my approach to enjoying tunes while staying safe, during my training and races.
Whether you’re an athlete, a casual runner, or someone who values safety and comfort, these headphones deserve your attention.
In this review, Im going to dive into their standout features, my firsthand experiences, and how Shokz compares to traditional headphones. I’ll also highlight a few areas for improvement, give you a deeper dive into how these headphones might help your training, and help you decide if Shokz is the next best accessory to add to your collection.
First Impressions:
A Game-Changer for Active Users
The first thing you notice about Shokz is their sleek, minimalist design. They’re lightweight, sit snugly around your head, and feature an open-ear concept that immediately makes you aware of how different from traditional in-ear or over-ear headphones these things are. When I first put them on, I was struck by how natural it felt to listen to music while still being fully aware of my surroundings, and just how comfortable they were while wearing them.
Shokz are built with athletes and active users in mind absolutely. Whether Im on a trail and need to be able to hear for animals, atvs, or anything else going on around me - to running or cycling near traffic, the fact that I am very aware of whats happening around me while still getting to enjoy my music is pretty cool. Price point - these werent all that bad either. Like all tech now-a-days, there are 18 million generations that get put out like clockwork, and Shokz is no expection. Offering variations for Swimming, Generic, or Pro versions - price for Shokz varies, but its safe to say you would be looking in the $100-$300 range to grab yourself a pair of these (depending on where you get them, sales, etc).
That being said, when you compare these to other traditional headphones they are spot on price wise, and I personally think you are actually getting a far better deal buying a pair of these, especially when you add in the cost of replacing waterlogged, sweat damaged, or broken headphones (which adds up $$$ quickly).
How I Tested my Shokz Headphones: Endurance Meets Everyday Use
Over the last year and a half, I’ve pushed my pair of Shokz to their limits in various scenarios:
Daily Runs: I made it my mission to wear my Shokz for every run. Short sprint sessions to long-distance trail runs, I found I was able to stay connected and enjoy my music while also being extremely aware of my surroundings.
Dog Walks and Bike Rides: Staying aware of traffic is my main goal with running, but there are a few times where I find myself in busier parts of town, where I have to compete with other people and vechiles. Staying aware to any hazards around me is crucial especially when out with the pup (priorities - and my pup is top of the list!) so knowing where all the going ons are is crucial, and Shokz excels here.
Endurance Events: This is probably my most favourite part of these headphones, I’ve worn them during multiple Spartan Races, including a Spartan Ultra and even a Backyard Ultra Race (for just under 50 straight miles). Their open-ear design ensures I can hear race officials, other participants, and be aware of any potential hazards— which actually allows them to be approved gear for these competitions - which means no more raw dogging long races without any good check out tunes!
Key Features and Benefits
Open-Ear Design
The hallmark feature of Shokz obviously is their open-ear design. By leaving your ears uncovered, these headphones let you hear ambient sounds while enjoying your music. For outdoor athletes, this means enhanced safety and a more immersive connection to your environment. But how does that hold up for the music... Lets take a look!
Bone Conduction Technology
Shokz uses bone conduction technology to transmit sound through your cheekbones, bypassing the eardrum entirely. The result? A comfortable listening experience that’s gentle on your ears and even accessible to those with certain hearing impairments. Fancy way of saying your skull vibrates the tunes and you literally become one with your music!!
Okay, okay, thats a little far fetched, but it sounded pretty cool though right?
Sound Quality
Compared to more traditional headphones, you can be sure that Shokz is gunna delivers clear, crisp audio, with good full range. Meaning, if you like blasting Tay Swift and getting your swizzle on, or rocking out to Death Metal, you are going to be able to enjoy your music with these headphones. Now, even though the bass might not be able to compete with high-end over-ear models, that provide a better quality from a noise cancelled environment, the sound clarity and quality you are going to get is impressive, especially in moderate settings. Trust me when I say that at maximum volume, nearby people may your backstreet boys music blaring and join in on your jam - thats how powerful these things are.
Battery Life and Durability
On a full charge, Shokz lasts through a week’s worth of 2-hour runs or up to about 10.5 hours of continuous use. Ive used these during ultra races that Ive ran, and the headphones performed continuously throughout the event without dying on me - that's an impressive achievement, because Im sure my body was more drained then these things were by the end of the race!
Another awesome thing to point out is that the headphones are sweat-proof, dust-proof, and can easily handle accidental drops, making them ideal for active lifestyles.

Fit During Winter: The rigid back rim can make wearing a hat during cold weather tricky, as it may push the hat out of place.
Volume Sensitivity: At maximum volume, others nearby will definetly be able to hear traces of your music - but these are OPEN ear headphones (so expected right?!)
